FORTY-SIX

Ty opened his truck’s console and found the piece of paper that Anna Austin had left. He looked at the way she’d written her name and phone number. The penmanship fluid, bold yet feminine, making or leaving a statement. Ty, call me sometime, Anna. Under her name, she had written her phone number. He glanced at his bruised knuckles and made the call. When she answered, he said, “Anna, it’s Ty McGill. How are you?”

“I should be asking you that question. I heard what happened at the Saddle Bar. I can’t believe you went in that dive bar. Did Donnie Long really file charges against you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Mama heard he did. She was getting her nails done and some of the women in the shop were talking about it.” Anna held the phone to her ear while she used her housekey to lock the front door to her parent’s home.

“Look, you told me your dad is an attorney. I’d like to speak with him.”

“He’s not here. Daddy’s in his office or maybe in court. I can give you his number. Probably should give you his cell number just in case he’s not in his office.”

“Great. Thank you.”

She gave him the number and said, “I can’t believe you fought with those two jerks, Donnie Long and Hugh Dunn.”

“I didn’t start it. I was just sitting at the bar when they walked up. Long took a swing, hitting me in the head. The other guy tried to hold my arms behind me while Long punched in my face. I didn’t have much choice but to defend myself or I’d probably be in the hospital today.”

“I’m not sure if my father handles bar fight cases. But, since you met him, he might. I can always put in a good word for you.”

“I’d appreciate that.”

“In return, you might buy me a cup of coffee.” She laughed.

“You drive a hard bargain. I can do that.”

“I’ll hold you to it. In the meantime, give me a couple of minutes before you call Daddy. I’ll text him that you’re gonna call, or if he’s in court, he might call you.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

“Bye, for now.”

After saving the information in his contact list, Ty slipped his phone in his jeans pocket. He turned and looked at Harley who stood near him, an anxious expression in the dog’s eyes. “Hey, why the worried face, huh? I’m not leaving you. Nobody’s gonna leave you again, Harley.” Ty looked up toward Mac’s front porch. Mac was taking a seat in a one of two wooden rocking chairs. His rocker was near a porch swing attached by chains to the outdoor oak plank ceiling over the main deck area. The swing was barely swaying in the breeze.

Ty and Harley walked up the four steps leading to the porch, two hanging baskets of ferns on either side, wind chimes tinkling. “Mind if we join you?” Ty asked.

Mac nodded. “Have a seat. Since Harley’s now got the run of the place, maybe he’ll find a new favorite spot to lie down up here.
